MORE FROM ITALY
1st Installment | 2nd installment | 3rd installment

December 4, 2006 – I can't resist sharing a few more shots (and stories) from Italy. We never expected to find a traditional turkey dinner in Italy on Thanksgiving Day, but we lucked out with a dinner invitation from Arlene and Russ Valentine, who live and work in Florence. We'd been introduced via email by mutual friends, Gunars Strazdins and Christian Thee. Although they had never met us in person, the Valentines took a chance and invited us to share the evening with them.

What a Meal
Arlene had been cooking for days! The guest list included 4 Italians, 1 Brit, and (thankfully) us. The feast included everything you'd expect for Thanksgiving, and then some. Arlene had to special order the turkey three weeks ahead because whole turkeys are seldom sold in Italy. Her sweet potatoes, again special ordered, were were brought in from Israel. Canned pumpkin was unavailable, so Arlene prepared the pumpkin pie from scratch. Thanks to the generosity of Russ and Arlene, we were able to enjoy a very special Thanksgiving meal with some very special people. (Everyone should be so lucky.)

Laura owns the "Chianti Classico Villa" (the family villa) in Tuscany, as seen here.
Elisabetta, in addition to owning a big loveable Newfie, owns "Hotel River" in Florence, as seen here.
