February 19, 2006 – This week concludes my coverage of the 2005 GDCA Futurity. For the record, there were 258 Futurity nominees entered in the show, but 97 of them did not participate. (That's a 37% "drop out" rate!) Of the remaining 161 that competed, 73 were male and 98 were female.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the Futurity is structured, this is how it works:

All participating puppies are grouped according to age and sex into 8 distinct classes:

Puppy Dogs - 3 months & under 5 months
Puppy Bitches - 3 months & under 5 months

Puppy Dogs - 5 months & under 7 months
Puppy Bitches - 5 months & under 7 months

    

Puppy Dogs - 7 months & under 9 months
Puppy Bitches - 7 months & under 9 months

Puppy Dogs - 9 months & under 12 months
Puppy Bitches - 9 months & under 12 months

First, they compete with each other within their own class. Next, the winners of each of the Puppy (male) Dog classes compete for Best Puppy Dog and Reserve Puppy Dog; the winners of the each of the Puppy Bitch (female) classes compete against each other for Best Puppy Bitch and Reserve Puppy Bitch. Finally, the winner of Best Puppy Dog competes against the winner of Best Puppy Bitch for the coveted title of BEST PUPPY IN FUTURITY.

The Juniors entries are grouped according to age and sex into 4 distinct classes:

Junior Dogs - 12 months & under 15 months
Junior Bitches - 12 months & under 15 monthss

    

Junior Dogs - 15 months & under 18 months
Junior Bitches - 15 months & under 18 months

The winners of each of the Junior Dog classes compete against each other for Best Junior Dog and Reserve Junior Dog. The winners of each of the Junior Bitch classes compete against each for Best Junior Bitch and Reserve Junior Bitch. The Best Junior Dog then competes against the Best Junior Bitch for the coveted title of BEST JUNIOR IN FUTURITY.

The most exciting part of the Futurity occurs at the end of the show when the BEST PUPPY IN FUTURITY competes against the BEST JUNIOR IN FUTURITY for the "supreme" title of BEST IN FUTURITY.
