June 16, 2008 — Now that I finally have some
free time on my hands, I'm able to do things I've wanted to do for a long
time. First on my list was to move "Ginnie.com" from Earthlink to Bluehost.
I've been using Bluehost for my clients' sites for several
years now and I have nothing but praise for their robust hosting environment,
their friendly 24/7 tech support and, last but not least, their incredibly low
monthly fees.
I knew that moving Ginnie.com would require work.
First, the entire site (over 4,000 files) had to be downloaded from Earthlink's
server. I completed this task last week. It was reasonably easy because here
in Germany I'm connected to a T1 line. (By contrast, at my studio in the US I
am tethered to a miserably slow satellite connection. It just couldn't handle
a full site back-up. )
Next, those same 4,000+ files had to be uploaded
to the new server at Bluehost.
This, too, was accomplished without too much fuss. But there was one catch. Bluehost's
cgi-bin is located in a different location than Earthlink's. My scripts needed
to be altered and certain pages updated (those employing a cgi-bin-based script)
in order for everything to work properly. Okay, that's all been done.
Now I'm at the testing stage. There are many pages
to check, but so far, so good. After I'm satisfied that the site has been fully
migrated, it's bye-bye to Earthlink after 12 years. That's way too long. A better
hosting environment at Bluehost AND
my monthly hosting bill for Ginnie.com drops by almost 90%. Happy days are here
again!
