— VENICE —
July 22, 2007 — It seems like I've
been away for a month, but it was really only a few weeks. Italy was wonderful
despite the summer heat and hordes of tourists. I enjoyed every minute of it —
and the food was to die for. My favorite dish? Ravioli, hand-stuffed with fresh
ricotta and spinach, served under a butter/garlic/sage sauce. Delicious.
Naturally, I spent a lot of time behind
the lens. In Venice I was rising at 5am to shoot before the tourists began
swarming and the sun rose too high. I loved the city at that early hour. Several
other determined photographers were out prowling the streets at dawn every
morning, just as I was. When I used my Lensbaby instead
of a standard lens,
it generated some interest among them. Nobody had seen such a strange lens. I
showed them how it works.
Since we're on the topic of Venice, I
guess that's where I'll start, even though we began our trip in Milan, which
I enjoyed very much. But more on Milan later; here are some of my (very) personal
views of Venice:
