TOP
TWENTY INVITATIONAL –
2nd Installment | 3rd
installment | 4th installment
November 13, 2006 – We'll begin
our review of the 2006 GDCA National Specialty right at the top — the Top
Twenty Invitational. This black-tie event
honors the country's top winning Great Dane champions from the previous
show year. It provides us with a rare opportunity
to view, at close range, many of the nation's very finest Great Danes, along
with their expert handlers. It's the place to see, and be seen!
For starters, I thought we'd do something a little different. Instead of looking
at the Danes right away, let's take a look at some of the people who attended
this exciting event...
Pictured above is the the Top Twenty panel of
judges. The judges are standing in front of their stewards. From left to right
they are:
Breeder Judge Tootie Longo,
who bought her first Great Dane puppy in 1969, as a pet. Tootie and her husband,
Joe, went on to make major contributions to the breed via their stellar breeding
program and through their active support of the Great Dane Club of America. If
you are "in
the know" about Danes, then you know about the Longos! Behind Ms. Longo
stands steward Mike Carvan.
Multi-Breed Judge Arlene Davis, who purchased her first Great Dane puppy
in 1963. That puppy went on to become a notable champion.
Ms. Davis has since, through a careful breeding program, produced many other
outstanding Dane champions. She has also bred champion Smooth Fox Terriers, Wirehaired
Dachshunds, Pembroke Corgis and Pointers. Ms. Davis is an AKC judge
of the Working, Sporting and Herding groups. Behind her stands steward O'Neil
Sullivan.
Handler Judge Doug Toomey, who
bought his first Great Dane in 1966. After serving in Vietnam as
a member of the K-9 Corps, handling sentry dogs, Mr. Toomey became interested
in professional dog handling and received his AKC handler's license in 1972.
He is well-known for his skillful handling, plus he has bred over 40 Dane champions.
Behind him stands his ring steward, Barbara Grote.
And now for a peek
at the audience...
I'll be showing more
audience shots as we go along (because I think they are fun) but now let's
