— FAREWELL TO FANNY —

June 26, 2006 – It is with great sadness that I present Miss Fanny, CHROMA Forever Mardi Gras CDX TDI CGC, for her final appearance on DaDane of DaWeek. Fanny passed away last week, four months shy of her 8th birthday. She was one of my all-time favorite personalities, having appeared several years ago in Blue Eyes, Blue Skies. I was always delighted to see Fanny whenever she accompanied her wonderful owners, Al and Judi Arsenault, to the GDCA Nationals. (The portrait above is based on a photo I took of Fanny when she was four years old.)

Fanny succumbed to osteosarcoma just four months after her unexpected diagnosis. Canine osteosarcoma is an invasive and highly metastatic form of bone cancer. It occurs most often in neutered large-breed dogs, 7-9 years of age.

Although Fanny's loss has devastated the Arsenaults and her breeder, JP Yousha, she leaves behind quite a legacy. Fanny was a Specialty High in Trial winner, CDX titled and Therapy/CGC certified. In 2002 and 2003 she ranked in the Top 10 of Obedience Danes. Not only that, she served her Connecticut community for many years as a Therapy Dane. Fanny also appeared on television in Target commercials!

But best of all, Fanny endeared herself to everyone who knew her. She brought immeasurable joy to the Arsenault family and she made her breeder proud. Please take a moment to visit Fanny's Memorial Page at CHROMADANE. And while you're there, be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page for important information about the relationship between early neutering and bone cancer.
