— A Visit to Barcelona's Aquarium —
October 5, 2009 – After five lovely days
in southern France (link) we
flew down to Barcelona, Spain, one of my favorite cities. Shortly after
our arrival, while my husband was off visiting colleagues at UAB (Universitat
Autònoma
de Barcelona), I set off on my own and visited L'Aquàrium de Barcelona
where I spent many happy hours. The octopuses were particularly engaging:
The sprawling Barcelona Aquarium provides scores of impressive exhibits but its Mediterranean
Oceanarium (link)
is unique to Europe and truly spectacular. It consists of a large circular
tank 118 feet in diameter and 16 feet deep. A 262 foot-long
tunnel flows along its floor; visitors pass through the tank on a slowly moving
mechanical sidewalk from which they can observe a vast and diverse community
of sharks, rays, moray eels, turbot, tuna, guitarfish, pilotfish, sunfish,
dolphinfish and many other sea animals including corals:
