— Doonka —
September 30, 2008 — A few days after encountering
Mariano at Barcelona's "Plaza de la Seu" I
had the good fortune of meeting another Great Dane at the very same plaza! His
owner spoke no English, and since I speak no Spanish (much less Catalan), we
communicated by smiling and pointing. First, I asked the dog's name. The answer
sounded something like "Doonka." Next I asked Doonka's age. I was met by
a blank stare so I counted on my fingers. Doonka's owner blessed me with a broad
smile and flashed 10 fingers. I flashed 10 back. He nodded. Doonka,
meanwhile, was very busy sniffing the ground. He paid us no attention.
His owner finally managed to tease him into action with
the promise of a nonexistent treat, enabling me to grab a few shots:
Homeward Bound
Tomorrow morning, bright and early,
we will leave our temporary home at HWK and
fly back to the United States. We have been enormously busy all week packing
suitcases and storing our household goods for when we return the Germany next
May. By the time we settle into our seats on the plane, I'll be more than ready
for a rest. And yes, I
hope to see many of you soon — at the Nationals!
