Day in Aix, France –

August 31,
2005 – Saturday is "market day" in Aix-en-Provence.
As the sun comes up, hundreds of vendors rush to set up their tables
in
the
public squares and along the
streets. The residents of Aix stream to the morning markets shopping
for fresh food such as fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, bread
and
cheese, along with a thousand other edibles (including rabbits). Flowers,
perfume, soap, jewelry, antique prints, pots and pans, and
clothing
of every description – it can all be found at the Saturday market.
Later in the day, by 2:00pm in
fact, the streets will be swept clean and no trace will be left of
the vendors or their goods. Tuesdays and Thursdays are also market
days, but Saturday is the BIG one, the one you don't want to miss.
The fruit and vegetable market is usually
the most crowded. I had the good fortune of arriving early and shooting
for a couple of hours before the rain came. Here are some of the people
and things I saw:
