– More from
India –
March
21,
2005 – We spent several days last week visiting old
friends in Ahmedabad, India. It was wonderful to see them again. I
will always hold a special place in my heart for the city, and more
importantly, for our friends who live there. We were surprised to learn
that Ahmedabad is now the sixth largest city in India. The ancient
central heart of Ahmedabad, which has a lot of character, is becoming
increasingly Muslim, whereas
many of the Hindus are migrating to the rapidly expanding margins of
the city. Tragically, the two groups do not always get along. Communal
clashes occur periodically, resulting in many violent deaths on both
sides.
We spent a couple of hours walking around
the inner city right before we flew back to Mumbai (Bombay). The people
we met along the way were spectacular. Below are a few of the many
photographs
