July 16, 2001 Those of you who have been following DaDane of DaWeek since its early days will probably remember "Killer Bunny," which first appeared here on June 3, 1996. It featured Margaret Kellogg's beautiful Alaskan fawn, Denali, courageously standing up to the dreaded killer rabbit.
I was sorry to learn that Denali passed away last week shortly after her eighth birthday. She had been in failing health due to severe arthritis in her spine and deteriorating vision. Most recently she battled bloat-related stomach problems. Barb sent me a note informing me of her loss:

All dogs do go to Heaven, especially the ones we love the most.
She is gone but will never be forgotten.
May you rest in peace, Denali. There are no killer bunnies in Heaven.
Jabber
Update
The culture and sensitivity report from Jabber's last urine sample
brought bad news. Jabber's E. coli has slowly evolved into some
sort of "super bug." Laboratory tests indicate it is
resistant to all available oral antibiotics. Not only that, but
it is now resistant to all injectableand intravenous antibiotics
except Amikacin and Tobramycin. Both of these are inherently toxic
to the kidneys and would require stringent serum monitoring. In
most cases the potential risk of this class of drugs outweighs
the potential benefit, except in cases of severe infection that
can't be otherwise treated.
We've decided to stop pursuing antibiotic treatment. We feel Jabber
has been through enough. For the past month he has been getting
large doses of cranberry concentrate and we are exploring other
"natural" options in hopes that Jabber's own immune
system might prevail. Right now Jabber seems comfortable. We've
seen no escalation of symptoms, although there is still plenty
of blood in his urine. We are hoping to get Jabber in for x-rays
or ultrasound later this week. Maybe that will tell us something
useful.
