We just returned from a wonderful trip to northern Germany! We were fortunate to attend the "VDH Europasieger-Zuchtschau 2000," a famous European championship dog show. It's said to be the biggest annual all-breed conformation show in Europe. During a three day period over 5,800 dogs were displayed, including hundreds of Europe's most noteworthy Great Danes. This week's DaDane features two unidentified Great Danes who had a chance encounter at the end of their leashes while their owners' backs were turned. As you can see, it was love at first sight.
We were invited to the Europasieger by Yvonne Putty, owner of Licht des Nordens Great Dane kennel. The day before the show, we took a train from Delmenhorst to Osnabrueck. We were met at the station by Yvonne and her husband. We had never before met them, yet they graciously opened their home to us. We had a wonderful afternoon chatting and playing with their beautiful Danes. That night they took us out for an unforgettable German meal. The next morning we drove to Dortmund to attend the show. And what a show it was! For the next few weeks I will be featuring many of the Great Danes we saw in Germany, as well as a few non-Danes. You will notice that all of the featured Danes have "natural" ears. That's because cropped ears are discouraged, if not expressly forbidden, in most European competitions.
