Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Carved into the face of a mountain of granite in the remote Black Hills of South Dakota, it is a national treasure symbolizing the ideals of freedom and democracy. It is a tribute to the leadership of four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It is also a tribute to one man's vision. A huge undertaking. Starting in 1925, patriot Gutzon Borglum dedicated the final years of his life to fulfilling his personal dream, that of sculpting a massive monument for the American people. Using the limited tools of his era, it took Mr. Borglum over 15 years to shape the Memorial. Work ceased at the time of his death in 1941. The face of time. Over the weekend a team of Great Danes secretly scaled Mount Rushmore. This dedicated group of workers toiled for hours on end, under cover of darkness, single-mindedly pursuing a mission to put a new face on the famous monument in time for Presidents' Day. Using countless tons of styrofoam, super-glue and acrylic paint, the Great Danes achieved their mischievous goal in record time. This morning the sun rose to shed its light on a transformed mountain.
