All around the United States, Great Danes and their families will be celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 25, 1999. This special American holiday is many a Dane's favorite day of the year. It's a day when they reflect on their good fortune. It's a day when they are especially grateful to be tall. Last year over 400,000 baked turkeys were reportedly snatched by Great Danes before the family had a chance to sit down to dinner. This is a conservative number, since many in-house turkey thefts are not reported to the police or veterinarian. Experts believe that each year over a half million turkeys are lost to Great Danes on Thanksgiving Day. Remember this: Most Danes have never met a turkey they didn't like. It takes less than 30 seconds for a Great Dane to grab a turkey and carry it off. This is a gentle reminder to keep a close eye on your Great Dane -- and on the family turkey -- this Thanksgiving. Leave neither unattended. It's bad enough to lose your Thanksgiving turkey, but it would be even worse to lose your Dane. Turkey bones can kill a dog, no matter how big or gentle he happens to be.
