On an island off the coast of Africa, a colony of natives holds a legend that they pass down from generation to generation. It is an old story without a credible foundation but the natives believe it and so should you. It was once told that long ago a great civilization of canines inhabited the island, long before man ever set foot on its soil. The dogs were mountainous creatures, the color of sand on the shore. Every evening just at dusk they would travel the islands coasts and plains from whereever they might have roamed to sit and meditate on the sandy shoreline as the great orb descended sizzling into the ocean. They were said to be highly intellectual beasts and ever given to reflections of their innermost beauty. Only when man arrived did they cease their travels to the shore. Chained and fenced they gave their meditations over to the two-legged one without complaint. And to this day it is said that their descendents scattered about the globe will watch a beautiful sunset with rapt attention, perhaps remembering what once had been on a small island lost to all but the surging sea. Note: This week's DaDane story was submitted by 19-year-old Courtney Hurst, owner of a black Dane mix puppy named Ransom. Thanks, Courtney!
