After reading Luna's story I felt compelled to hug my "little" girl. I have a mantle as well and just the thought of someone being so cruel to a beautiful animal (even though Great Danes think they are human) sickens me.
Good luck with Luna- may she bring your family as much enjoyment as Xena did to ours! |
Here's one prayer for Luna...may her remaining years be many and may they be as filled with Love and Hugs and Treats as the previous months had been without. May Jackie be blessed with Luna's love and care for lots of years...they deserve to be together for a long, long time!

Ginnie, I truly agree with the very last line in your commentary! Yes I also do hope that these people have a place at the other end as you said and I certainly hope they will have to confront me when they arrive there.
How wonderful that Luna is now on the road to health and recovery. I can only wish her the very best and I know her new owners will treat her as I treat my wonderful Dane; Shufi ! Congratulations to you and all animal lovers in this world. |
I'm so horrified that our species (humans) have the capacity to inflict such pain and suffering on what is (in my oppinion)God's most beautiful work--The Great Dane. If we-the human race, could have the capacity to love and cherish as our loyal breed does, wouldn't this world be a beautiful place?! To Jackie and Luna--God be with you both, as he has brought you together.
I can't understand why the Michigan animal control authorities didn't act on the 3 previous complaints they had received. Why does it always take an animal's near death to get them moving? Is there a level of suffering(death by starvation), that they must witness first before acting on a complaint. Shame on them as Luna would undoubtly suffered alot less had they gotten involved sooner. Luna--your home now baby-and we all love you! |
In working with rescue, we see cases quite like this from time to time. Man's capacity for inflicting suffering on those weaker than him continues to amaze. I cried all the way through this article, but am so happy that Luna is one of the lucky ones. I could tell you stories just as heart-rending, but without the happy ending. Thank you, Jackie.

I wasn't going to read this, Ginnie, but I did. The tears are streaming down my face.
Thank God for Jackie and those humans like her. I just don't understand it, I have no words. |
I don't understand why the choices were that Luna's first family hand her over OR have charges filed against them. Why not both? What's to stop them from doing this again to another dog? And why should they get away with it ? |
Thanks for sharing. Sadly, in rescue we see this monthly at least. The only comfort is knowing that they won't suffer like it again. Just this weekend, we found Pearl a forever home. She was a timid, obviously abused little merle/white girl that would not untuck her tail from under her even when she was slowly, cautiously wagging it. It took a lot of time, but she trusts humans again and will be spoiled ROTTEN in her new home. So glad Luna had a happy ending. They are what keeps rescue folks from throwing in the towel! |
What an amazing story! Thanks to God, as He truly did bring Jackie & Luna together....I'm sure this happens on an all too-frequent basis, and I've said a prayer for all the people who take care of animals! |
Isn't it amazing that dogs are such forgiving animals? If a species was as mean to humans as humans were to Luna - they would be hated and feared forever! Yet Luna accepted love and responds with the same.
My good thoughts are for Luna's recovery and my thanks are for her current good fortune. Happy tails to Luna! |
thank you for this wonderful happy ending. Good luck to Luna and Jackie...And thanks Ginnie for keeping us reading every week about our wunder-doggies |
Thank you, Jackie, for taking this sweet girl in, and giving her the life that every Dane deserves. Thank you, Ginnie, for sharing their story with us. Now I have to go hug my Dane. |
Ginnie
Love coming to your site every Monday. When I came yesterday morning and read: Grab a tissue, there was no way I could read this story. Today I came back cause I had to know what happened to this poor creature. Yes I cried but here's one more prayer coming her way. Jackie may God bless you! I know what those big eyes can do. I own 2 Danes myself and one is a rescue. Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for saving such a sweet gentle giant. Bonni, Hugs to Luna!!! |
I do not understand how anyone could be so crule to such a beautiful girl. My prayers are with you Jackie and Luna. May she recover and live a long a very happy life with such a wonderful family. I have to go and give my girl Holly a big hug and treat. Danes are the best thing that can happy in one life. They bring so much love and joy. God bless you both. Many warm hugs coming your way, Linda & Holly Simone (my best friend) |
This could be our story! I, too, adopted an abused Dane. Her name is Kiki. I fell in love on the internet when she was turned in with 4 other Danes in Arkansas. I live in Seattle. I had her taken into a clinic for a month to get her up to traveling. Then found a wonderful family that transports animals by van all over the country. Once here, it took 5 hours to get her into the house. She'd never been in one. She weighted 65 lbs and had scars everywhere. She would only eat cornbread which I baked every morning. She finally began to eat dog food with the other dogs. Three years later she is 150 lbs and talks to me every day. (Nothing like a talking Dane!)
So Kiki and I (and the other 3 dogs) send our love and prayers to Luna. May her only job in life now be sharing love! |
Luna's story is so much like th story of the one of the first dane I ever rescued. Bones weighed in at 67 pounds and was 36 inches tall at his shoulders. His owners also brought him into the vet. The vet then convinced them to release him and MAGDRL was called. Bones lived 6 years in a wonderful adoptive home after spending months with me to get healthy. Bones passed away this past June from congestive heart failure but at least he new love and warmth just as Luna now does.
Thank goodness for folks like Jackie and the caring vets that she works for. |
God bless people like Jackie.I have a agreat dane/sheppard mix named Jessie, whom I got from the Humane Society and even tho she can be a pain at times, I love her to bits. My prayers are with you and Luna!! |
This story could also be about the two danes we rescued from the animal shelter. They both weighed in at 60 pounds. It was horrible to see these dogs in that condition. They too had heartworms. That was three years ago and they are the sweetest danes we've ever had. Charlie is a big blue love machine!!!! They also fit in well with the other three danes we have!!!!! |
I will never understand the total darkness inside some people.
After reading this story I laid on the couch and cried, and was quickly joined by my 2 rescue danes. I hope that Jackie and Luna have a wonderful life together. Thanks Jackie for saving this beautiful girl. Tracy |
The tears are still running down my face. It totally amazes me how cruel people can be to those that can not defend themselves. We have one rescue girl that is finally coming out of her shell, each day we see improvement in her. I tried very hard to get them to tell me her pervious owners just so they could see how good of a dog she really is. Mans inhumanty to man will never stop to astound me. Thank you for all you have done for Luna |
Wow, what an incredible story. May God Bless Jackie and her family for saving Luna. Thanks for sharing this one Ginnie!! |
I have known Jackie for a very long time and can tell you that I've never met a more loving person toward all animals. Jackie - you are truly a blessing and a Godly example to all of us. I, too, believe that there is a special place for staff at the animal hosptial in which Jackie works. Although not a Dane mom - my love for my Shih Tzu is much deeper than those without animals could imagine. I know that Luna will be loved and spoiled and loved some more by Jackie and her family. Love you Jackie! (-: |
Jackie's story really touched my heart! I adopted Obie a year ago on June 6, 2003. He was so sick, that if I left him in that shelter, he would have died from the severe parasitic infections he had, causing his intestines to block up, and various other ailments. He spent his first 9 days in intentive care, and it took me at least 6 months to finally get a clean bill of health on him. He was 65 lbs when I brought him home. A year later, he weighs a whopping 97 pounds, and shows his undying love and gratefulness to me for saving his life. Yes, they do know! He loves his Blue sister, Tara, with all his heart. The best part of my day, no matter how horrible it might have been, is to walk in that door and have Obie and Tara right there greeting me! The feeling is indescribable. God bless you, Jackie, and all others whose hearts go out to saving these poor animals. |
