Ginnie, I am sure I am not the only one thanking you for all the many hours of voluntary work you put into the different issues our Danes are facing.
At this time I also thank you for your wonderful sense of humor you show in other DaDane segments.
Greetings from the mesa.
Ingrid

I really love your website!!! I think that it is really great that you share with the readers so much about possible diseeases that our danes could have. Now that you have shown some sad stories, how about featuring some stories about dogs who are great in the show ring. This would really be appriciated. Thank you...Laura

Laura, This is not from Ginnie, as you can tell if you look at any of the pictures I have taken at National over the years (except this one). I don't think that Ginnie intentionally does sad stories but educational items instead. They may be sad to some but I, for one, feel that she has done a good amount of Confirmation, Obedience, Agility & other "Show" pics & stories. If you look back thru the 7+ years of DaDanes I think you will find a wonderful amount of stories about Great Danes & even some other animals like squirrels & toads. Just take a tour & you will be pleasantly surprised.

George's story was very informative, as we also have an Atypical.
Our girl (Golden Retriever) was dx with Atypical AD in Oct of 2000.
She continues to do very well and for that we are grateful.
The discussion of Addison's disease in this series will hopefully help others in need.
With admiration and gratitude,
Sharon and Becky B.

Hey our story wasn't a sad one. :-) We are thrilled that Tank is still here with us. He lights up our lives every day. While his experience was difficult, it had a very happy ending and we consider ourselves lucky, as I said in the story. We also consider ourselves specailly bleesed to have him in our lives. What would be sad is for anyone to lose a Dane to AD simply because they and their vet were not familiar with it. And that has happened far too many times. By sharing our story and the others these last 3 weeks, hopefully Ginnie has helpd prevent that. And that is a happy thing too. I want to thank Ginnie for working so hard over the years to bring us the entire spectrum of life with a Dane (or as in my case a house full of Danes).

My dane Gunner was just diagnosed with AD last week. He looked awful when i brought him home, but since has been on an ID diet from the vet. I'm happy to say he's doing better everyday. If anyone knows any (more cost effective) methods for controlling this disease, could you fill me in? Thanks!!

Thank you for your website. Our 3-year old dane, Grateful, was just diagnosed with AD and megaesophagus. They may be connected, as the retching is recent to the last few weeks. Do you have any advice for treating this? How do we get him to eat standing, and stay upright? He is such a sweet dog. Many thanks, Mary

My 3 year old harlequin (Atlas) is currently in treatment for what we believe is Addison's (it's the weekend and he is at the emergency vet..we get tested on Monday). This all started last weekend with what we thought was a partial bowel obstuction..which is actually what got us into the vet..3 days in a row. He had a mucousy small BM on Tuesday, wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, wouldn't get on our bed (his favorite place). By the next morning, no better, to the vet, MD heard a heart murmur (never had one before on exam..in fact another doc had listened to him b/c we went out of town a couple weeks before and the sitter had a vet examine him after a loose stool with possible blood)...IV fluids all day, ate a bit, drank a bit, cleared his bowel obstruction (a golf ball size greenie from Tuesday)..back home...overnight detiorated. Back to the vet, I fluids again all day(MD added potassium..mind you no labs drawn yet). Picked him, looked great, drank some at home, ate some chicken, again detiorated over night. Back to the vet, new doc on, drew labs, abd. x-ray..high potassium, low sodium, high creatinine, doc said maybe Addisons let's start prednisone and reeval in the AM. Took him, lethargic again all day, ate a llittle, no water, later that night I was listening to his heart and heard and arrhythmia and murmur still present. An hour later he had stumbled over himself trying to get off the couch. 20 minutes later he's at the ER vet and still weak and depressed, lethargic. Admitted him, chest x-ray ok, EKG ok, labs worse than before and potassium 8.6!! So, he's on fluids and looking like his old self(bright, interested, drinking), getting dexamethasone this weekend and waiting to go back to his vet for his ACTH test. They are pretty sure this is what it is and it seems to be the case. Thanks to the doctor on Friday for alerting us to it! Atlas is still with us, not completely out of the woods but farther out than he has been!

Couple typos up there b/c I am still shaken up. This all started last Monday..today is Saturday. I gave him a Greenie on Monday and by Tuesday after noon I was noticing a difference in him. With his heart murmur that they heard on Wednesday I of course listened to him constantly at home (I am a nurse) and never heard the arrhythmia I heard on Friday night. His only big sign for days was the extreme lethargy. He just didn't want to stand up at all for any time period. The weakness in his back legs started on Friday night at 11 pm. Although we had noticed him walking very slowly and gingerly on his back legs all week since the passing of the Greenie but thought "oh he's just sore"..it was a pretty explosive passing. I will update on Atlas but please please please, always insist to your vets to test test test! Better to be overly cautious than not enough!! We do it wiht people at the hospital so why not with our animals that cannot verbalize what's going on!!

So, Atlas is AD! We found out this past Tuesday (March 7, 2006) and he got his first dose of Percorten, started on Prednisone. The day after he saw a holistic vet and got acupuncture and switched to Hydrocortisone per his conventional vet after I spoke with them. So, go visit his blog for pics and updates! Thanks to all the support we got while he was in the hospital!

By the way, I'm sure you have assumed right but yes Atlas is Primary AD. We go in for 2 week labs next week. He's doing better and better each day! Visit his blog! www.addisondanes.blogspot.com
