Oh Ginnie, what wonderful pictures. Thank you. I really enjoyed seeing the Top Twenty... both the dogs and the audience. It reminds me of what FUN you can find in dog sports. How often do you get a chance to dress in evening wear and look at some of the most beautiful dogs in the world. I spent the weekend at our local kennel club all-breed dog show... the other end of the spectrum. I got to visit with my friends, walk dogs, carry crates, and eat BBQ sitting outside in front of the RV. I watched my friends get judged performing both conformation and obedience, knowing what hours they have put into their dogs training. Our dogs bring us together and make us challenge ourselves whether it is in formal wear or blue jeans. I love it!
Thank you, Mary Lugo

We missed going to the Top 20 showcase this year....so this was a special treat, Ginnie!! Love the dogs, of course, and the people, too! Thank you....and congrats to all those gorgeous Danes who represented our beloved breed so very well.

Ginnie, I like your decision to show the judges, their stewards and some of the audience in conjunction with the Top 20 of this year. Very good idea.

I'll caveat with I'm a novice -- what exactly is a steward?

Are judges allowed to enter their own dogs into competitions? I'm guessing they wouldn't be permitted to judge their own dogs, but can they enter in others or must they stop showing?

Thanks for the info on the judges -- they are probably always overly crtitized and underrecognized. Judging anything is difficult - heck I think they all look great - the dogs look nice too!

Hi Diane,

The ring steward helps the judge keep the ring and exhibitors in order and helps call in the next classes and show the exhibitors where to go when they first get into the ring. A good steward is a wonderful assistant to the judge. The judge alone picks the winners, but the steward makes sure the judge passes out the right awards and marks the book correctly.

Judges can continue to breed and show dogs. They can no longer handle dpgs in the ring which do not belong to them. Dogs related to dogs bred by the judge can be exhibited. Often times there are relatives somewhere back in the family tree.....but most exhibitors will not show a dog bred by or sired by a judge or their dog. A judge wouldn't typically judge their own dog, either! LOL!

Judging is certainly not as easy as it looks. A good judge takes the job seriously and wants to do their best in selecting the best dogs. It can be a real challenge!

Hope that helps :)

Fabulous Ginnie! The shots of the people involved makes it more fun. It made it feel like I was there.....wait a minute, I was there :) Dick has great movement (the Dane does too). Loved them all, so hard to choose. Sure wish there was a natural ear in there...........patience.
