Great article! I didn't realize something could be done to help prevent this! What a great idea to do the surgury at the spay!

Your Highness Gaysie May, you are my idol and I thank you for writing this article to let all of our fellow Danes know about this nasty "Bloat". Now if the humans would just make sure to look for the signs we will be ok.

I had my dane tacked when she was spayed and it really didn't add much to the bill at all -- I'm forgetting the exact amount -- but I recall my total bill only being about 250.00.

When I had my second dane spayed and wanted to do the tack, they were unable since she had gone into heat and lost blood, so they weren't able to do it, if I'm remembering it was the fact that they didn't want her under any more anesthesia than she already was -- so if you can get your females spayed before they go into heat, it's advised.

A very good article. I am a Doberman boy dog and my mom say's I am also at risk of bloat.

Since Gaysie Mae is my mom's favorite Great Dane in all the world mom was VERY upset when her Highness bloated and VERY, VERY glad that she made it through surgery so well.

My mom has read all the aritcles about bloat and soaks my food with water all the time and won't let me play very much after eating so we have our fingers crossed.

Gaysie Mae you are a very special girl and you make me feel better because I know there is something mom could do for me if I bloated.

Gay's Mom @ 12:34AM | May 20th 2003|

This spring has been quite the season for bloat. Within just a couple weeks, I had a foster-Dane bloat (she didn't make it), Gay's Aunt Frankie's Neapolitan Mastiff bloated the same night as my foster (Lacena was treated at the same emergency clinic as Gaysie), and is recovering well.
These were my 3rd and 4th experiences with bloat--my older Dane, Allisson, bloated once, about 5 years ago, and my Dobe, Casey Jones, about 3 years ago (same clinic, both times.) Allisson hasn't ever bloated again, Casey has bloated (but not torsioned), twice.
It's a terrifying experience.

You look absolutely stunning, Princess! :-)

With your looks, Ginnie's talent, and your mom's wizardry at setting up your computer's bark recognition software so you can publish your thoughts, this is a WONDERFUL DaDane of the Week. Thanks to all of you for bringing up this topic in a practical, educational manner. I'm rather paranoid about the possibility of my Danes Scottie and Zena bloating, and this is giving me more food for thought about preventative gastropexies. You've presented this topic well - offering information without judgment. It's truly an example of Royal Grace. Thank you again, Princess Gaysie Mae.

Gay, you have been letting Raven use your bark recognition software again.
However in this case I forgive because we all care about you. Your picture is wonderful and your article is great! A wonderful way to educate people about what can happen and how to "fix" it and/or help prevent it from happening.
Take care Gaysie Mae we love you.

Dear Gaysie,
Thanks for the great story, though it was kind of scarry. The part about 'bedience and'gillity was very interesting. My Mom has been talking about that stuff...I had no idea, I'm just in puppy school.
I hope I can have the gastropexy when I am spayed rather than the way you had it.
One of your admirers, Abbey

Gaysie,
I am so glad you feel better now. I know your Mom must have been so scared. I know my Mom would be, too.
Now she has learned more since reading about this. Thanks, you tell a good story, sorry for your ouchies.

Gypsy & Rocky @ 4:22PM | May 22nd 2003|

Hi, I'm Gypsy and I bloated on April 23. Because of losing my spleen and terrible heart complications, I ended up going to Purdue North Central. I spent 5 days in all between emergency, my doctor, and Purdue. I am now off all medicines and finally starting to look like a dane instead of a Greyhound again (lost 30 pounds). My mom suspected seasonal allergies somehow. Since I bloated, I have heard of 5 more in my town within two weeks. I'm glad you are okay! Gypsy & my brother Rocky (who bloated the Sunday after 9/11/01 I guess mom was too emotional and it upset Rocky).

I just love the way the back-ground flows with the angle of Gaysie's topline and blends with her color all the while making her stand out as Queen of the mountain! Great story, too! Glad it had a happy ending :)

Gaysie...

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better now.... I can't believe it's been 4 months since I've seen you! I hope you & Allison are happy with Ana & all your new rescues. I just love my new home! I get to eat all this yummy raw meat, and I get to sleep on my mom & dad's bed! Mommy even takes me to work most days, because I am such a good boy for her. I do still miss you & Allsion a lot, but I wanted you to know that I am very happy & content here in Ontario!
Sending you lots of clean breath kisses & big hugs!

Love,
Apollo

In Loving Memory of Sir Winston Kupp - We lost are 4 yr. old merle 6 months ago to bloat and I still don't understand how. The vet. says he developed toxins in his blood where part of his stomach had died. But if they hadn't waited 18 hours to do surgery I think he may have been okay. Thanks to your article I'll now know how to handle the situation. God Bless.

Judy (Merlyn's momma) @ 5:32PM | Sep 24th 2004

We lost our beautiful merlequin, Merlyn, to bloat on 9/22/04. He would have been 5 years old on 11/07 this year. I could kick myself for not knowing the signs of bloat...I thought it was just a tummy ache, since on occasion he would eat a bit of grass to throw up. We have had many other Danes, and this is the first time we have ever had this happen. His daddy almost got him to the vet, Merlyn died on the way there. His buddy, a fawn named Storm, seems to miss him as much as we do. Simethicone is going to be something that is added to the medicine cabinet, hopefully we never need to use it for Storm, but it will be there just in case. Merlyn was a gentle sweetie that is being sorely missed. We had gotten him out of a bad situation (the guy seemed to care about him, but he was so god-awful skinny it was pitiful) over 2 years ago, and he was the best guy ever. Drooled a river to get his Glucosamine pill for the early arthritis that he had....cheese was a favorite, but bread produced just as big a drool puddle! :)

thank-you so much for sharing this valuable bloat info. I got my first Dane about a year ago, and he bloated Wednesday night. Had I not known what to look for or what to do, he might not be here with me right now. Thanks to you and this website for making this information availiable and helping to save my special guy's life!

Good article, unfortunately just a day late. My 8 year old merle "Merlin" died about 24 hours ago from torsion bloat. It was very hard on me and also my wife and kids. He was a good dog and now I know more about this for the future. I thought i knew enough to look out for this but evidently not. Nwo i wont ever have a problem recognizing its symptoms.

Michael Magee @ 12:53AM | Apr 8th 2006|

Hi,

Jazz, our 4 1/2 year old great dane, was doing great in the morning of 4-3-06. But by the afternoon, he just did not look right. He began showing the typical symptoms of bloat....wretching, belching, throwing up foam, and a far away look in his eyes. We did not waste any time, and rushed him to an emergency vet clinic here in Lafayette, Louisiana. The vet showed us the x-ray of poor Jazz's twisted stomach and began to explain the danger involved and the price to correct it. Of course I told him, "I don't care about the price, just save Jazz!" He ran out of there to do just that! We picked up Jazz the next morning after his surgery (and many prayers by us) and he is home recovering. We are soooo lucky to have been home when this happened, and are so thankful for the emergency clinics rapid response to save our "son."

I hope more great dane owners will educate themselves on bloat so that they can, if the need arises, get quick medical attention for their great dane!

I loved your article. It touched my heart, made my eyes water and brought a smile to my weary lips.

I am glad your Gaysie Mae is doing well. I wish her a long, healthy, happpy life and a lot of love from her to you!

Michael
