November 28, 2005 – It's time for us to take a break from the "beauty pageant" and witness the athletic accomplishments of a select group of Great Danes. I had never before attempted to shoot Danes in action and it was quite a challenge. Overall, I am reasonably pleased with the outcome; however, I'd like to find more opportunities to hone my skills in this area. There's a lot of room for improvement.

This week's DaDane is the first of a two-part gallery of Agility shots from the 2005 GDCA National Specialty. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Agility competition, here is a quick explanation.

What is Agility?
Agility is an AKC-sanctioned sport in which dogs compete to achieve qualifying scores over an obstacle course. The AKC characterizes Agility Trials this way:

"The purpose of AKC Agility Trials is to afford owners the opportunity to demonstrate a dog's willingness to work with its handler under a variety of conditions. The program begins with basic entry-level agility, and progresses to more complex levels that require dogs to demonstrate higher levels of training and interaction with their handlers.

"Agility results in a better rounded, conditioned dog, provides good basic training for search and rescue dogs, demonstrates good training and citizenship and has excellent spectator appeal."

I can vouch for the spectator appeal! I've also heard Agility characterized as an amusement park for dogs. Obviously, it is much more than that. However, nobody can deny that "Agility Dogs" relish their sport. Without further ado, let's begin looking at our Agility Danes.
